LIGHT WELLS AND REFLECTIONS
The architectural scope of the house focuses on creating solutions to introduce openness and light in a traditional brownstone. Partitions to the parlor floor are demolished to create one great room. The balcony at the rear of the building will be enclosed with glass to create a sun filled kitchen with an eating area. A new light well is introduced to the darkest corner of the living room. It will be the armature for plant life to thrive in the home. Interior windows on the 2nd and 3rd floor are introduced to create a sharing of light and views. A skylight over the stairwell is kept, and the finish of the staircase is lightened to allow light to reflect further down the interior. The use of reflective materials such as lacquered ceilings, folded metals millwork, mirrors and glazed tilework further amplify a carrying through of light and reflections through the home.
THE JEWEL BOX
The interior of the house is conceived as a mirrored jewel box. The communal areas such as the ground floor, parlor floor and staircase are intricately detailed with historic character or delicate modern interventions, in a neutral palette adorned with reflective materials and small transparent openings. The doors open to private areas such as the salon, bedrooms and family room. Like opening a jewel box, each room reveals a special, brilliant, and bespoke character.
